Career Alchemy: Turning a Hobby Into Your Next Career

A recent “graduate” of the ClearlyNext program was stumped about what she wanted to do next. At the time, she had been the Director of a resource center at a university in Michigan. She was ready to move on, but was unclear how. To make a longish story short, after much self-reflection and many discussions with others (conducted through the ClearlyNext program, of course), she decided to focus on turning two of her avocations into vocations. Here’s what she wrote upon completion of the program:

You got it. She figured out how to turn her passion for animals and animal welfare into her next career while putting the pieces in place to build a business around her love for quilting.

I know this sounds like a commercial for ClearlyNext (which it is), but the main reason for passing this along is to show that IT CAN BE DONE. You can turn your hobby into a career. It’s not easy, there are certainly lots of pitfalls and things to sort through, but it is possible.
